What is this? This is probably the larva of a large beetle, such as the palm weevil grub, rhino beetle grub, or wood-boring beetle grub. In many countries, people call it the “palm worm” or “sago worm.” It lives in rotting wood, palm trunks, or rich soil. Is it dangerous? To humans: No. It doesn’t bite or sting.
To plants: Yes. Some species damage palm trees and other trees because they eat the wood from the inside. Why do they look cooked? They have a shiny, glossy appearance, as if they’ve been fried. In some cultures in Asia, Africa, and South America, they are actually eaten after cooking
