One of the most recognizable memories is seeing dozens of freshly washed diapers hanging outside on a clothesline in the sunshine. The bright white fabric moving in the breeze became an ordinary sight in many neighborhoods.
Using cloth diapers required considerably more work than modern disposable diapers. Parents had to rinse them, wash them thoroughly, dry them, and keep a steady supply available. Some families used a diaper pail to store soiled diapers until laundry day.
Yet cloth diapers also had advantages. A single diaper could be washed and reused many times, making them economical for families willing to do the extra laundry. They also didn’t require parents to constantly purchase disposable replacements.
